This course will be an introduction to the basics of zen practice and meditation. We will cover the history of Zen from its origins in China up to its present state in the modern world. We will also learn traditional Zen meditation methods plus simple mindfulness techniques that promote the living of a more joyful and focused life. Students will be introduced to forms of 'engaged Buddhism,' chanting practice, and the role of women in current Zen organizations. Three classes will be held on Wednesday evenings, and one class will take place on Saturday morning. The Saturday class will include a formal Zen lecture followed by a question and answer period. Special emphasis will be directed toward the current health crisis we are facing and how Zen can help us find balance and greater peace in times of uncertainty.
