Genealogy often awakes a lifelong passion. It's truly a citizen's hobby. Anyone can participate and, depending on ones focus and pocketbook, no expensive equipment is required. There are always unanswered question, however, for even the most astute family historian. But because our genetic record dovetails the family record, genetic genealogy can take the hobbyist places traditional genealogy could never have imagined. No doors are open and records now left in dust will often reveal themselves in every cell of our bodies. What information is found in Y-DNA, MT-DNA and autosomes? The class will describe the various tests, the testing companies, the relative costs, and explain what the results reveal about our families' history. Misconceptions and cautionary tales will also be discussed. Although the class is designed for the novice, anyone with any degree of knowledge and passion on the subject will be welcomed.
Genetics can't replace the genealogical record, but genetic genealogy has become one of the best tools for breaking through brick walls and the list recesses of our history.
