Ancient Rome: The Empire

This course will explore the major historical events of the Roman Empire and its exciting history up to 476, when imperial unity disintegrated in Western Europe. We will cover the dramatic end of the Republic, the centralization of power, the military expansion, and the social developments that shaped the lives of those that lived within and outside the imperial borders. We will cover the lives of legendary figures such as Augustus, Caligula, Nero, and Marcus Aurelius and discuss their achievements, failures, and their impact on history. We will also examine the rise of Christianity and the dramatic end of the Empire due to instability and invasion.
