You're Writing a Memoir? A How-To Workshop

ID : 7872
« back to classes page
Overview: Using a workshop format this class facilitates the writing of personal memoir. A goal of the class is to clarify the distinctions that apply to memoir writing specifically: finding a thematic mode (narrowing the scope), establishing a personal writing voice, clarifying setting (time and place), and determining point of view and tense preferences. It also emphasizes group support. A bonus is that the skills taught in the class readily transfer to other forms of personal writing. The workshop will be instructional but also participatory, students benefitting from the expertise of the instructor and from direct class feedback. Students will write for twenty minutes each class meeting, after which they can share their working drafts and garner feedback from the instructor and the writing group. They can also just listen and learn from the class-instructor interaction. Students can submit up to five pages of memoir writing weekly for instructor feedback and coaching. No homework; no grades.
