Eve Was Framed: The Processes and Consequences of Making Mythic Enemies

« back to classes page
We humans are myth making animals. We create myths and all too often we act out those myths and people get hurt. History abounds with examples, one of the most egregious and interesting is how large a role the Adam and Eve story has played in the centuries-long suppression of women.

This course will trace how human societies create scape-goat groups within them that become marginalized and persecuted as the source of evil. Beginning with the Biblical story of Adam, Eve and the Serpent, which was used to vilify women in Christendom as the results of misreading and misinterpreting the story, we will follow the bread crumbs of history to the witch hunts of the middle ages. We will then compare the mythmaking processes and the social action that comes from it to several modern examples of the same process in which religious, political and social forces combine to accomplish a lot of harm in the world.
