« back to classes page
Discover young adult literature! This course is designed for writers of all levels who want to create fiction for teens. Each session will focus on a different subgenre of contemporary YA Lit: realistic fiction, historical fiction, and apocalyptic/dystopian fiction. The class will read excerpts from novels and then analyze and discuss elements of craft, such as characterization, voice, dialogue, suspense, and story structure. Then, through fun and diverse writing exercises, you will experiment with applying these elements to your own writing. All of the novels that the class will explore have been published in the last 20 years, such as works by Jason Reynolds, Paolo Bacigalupi, Angie Thomas, Lisa Ko, or Laurie Halse Anderson. You will learn about critical issues YA writers take into consideration, such as relevance, text complexity, and age appropriateness. You will develop story ideas and character sketches, as well as practice honing your craft.
