« back to classes page
Several billion eyeballs have fallen on television producer Don Cambou’s documentaries. After his 35 year career in Los Angeles, he returned to Sonoma County. He recently wrote, produced, and directed “Santa Rosa: The Chosen Spot of All the Earth…” for the Historical Society of Santa Rosa. In the first class session, students will view the film, then Cambou will give them a step-by-step breakdown of how the film was created. He’ll address budget, financing, outline, shooting, drone work, writing, animation, editing, narration, music, sound effects, mixing, mastering, and distribution. Throughout this presentation, he’ll give students insights into the Hollywood Biz. He’ll encourage students to ask questions whenever they arise. And he’ll give each student a DVD of the film to view again before the next session. Students will keep these DVDs.

In the second class session: “What We Left Out and Why,” Cambou will be joined by beloved Santa Rosa journalist and historian Gaye LeBaron. Together, they’ll talk about the technical reasons and historical reasons some stories were left out of the film, or are included in a very abbreviated form. LeBaron will be able to elaborate on certain stories with several minutes of detail on what may have only taken 30 seconds of screen time.

Cambou guarantees that after attending this special two session class, you’ll never view any documentary in the same way again.
