Do you need extra income? Do you have more home than you need, but don’t want a roommate? Do you need a live-in caregiver? Does your aging parent or returning child need a place to live? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions and are a homeowner, creating a private accessory dwelling unit (a.k.a. second unit or in-law apartment) could address your need.

Recent changes in state and local zoning code have removed long-standing barriers, making it possible for many homeowners to create legal accessory dwelling units. A simple permitting process has also been introduced to turn a spare bedroom(s) into a “junior” accessory dwelling unit.

Come learn what it would take to create a private living space in your home. Course topics include a description of the various types of units, zoning requirements, financing options, rental considerations, and the steps involved in adding a cottage or transforming a garage, basement, or bedroom into a comfortable living unit. The second class will be an interactive session during which the instructor will answer questions and review layouts of participants’ homes for accessory dwelling unit potential.
