Alchemical Art: The Intersection Of Art Making and The Unconscious

« back to classes page
Carl Jung recognized that Alchemy, the process of turning basic metals into gold, was a metaphor for psychological development.  It demonstrates the process of transforming everyday awareness into deeper consciousness of oneself and the nature of the soul.
This class will appeal to anyone interested in psychology, creative self-exploration, Jungian thought or art.
Through two highly experiential days, you will learn to employ the attitude of the alchemist, emphasizing the use of experimentation and observation.  You will experiment with texture, color and image while observing your emotional and psychological states as you do so.  You will observe signs and symbols as they appear on the paper and learn to reflect on their personal or collective meaning.
Though you will be working with paint and collage, you need absolutely no art experience or skill.  This very user friendly method is designed to encourage experimentation and self-reflection while deemphasizing aesthetics.
You will leave the course with a mixed media art technique that you can use for ongoing self-discovery.
You will also learn about Jungian concepts such as Active Imagination and symbol emergence through didactic teaching sections. These ideas will become alive and tangible through the mixed media art process.
