This course will highlight the history and art of six fascinating urban centers during their cultural Golden Age. Each week we will uncover the secrets of a different City of Intrigue. Class sessions will be a creative blend of lecture, discussion, and extensive visuals.

Week 2) Prague  – The Golden City – Bohemian Capital – Imperial Court of Emperor Rudolf II  – Scientific Revolution – Astronomy of Kepler & Brahe

Week 3) Lisbon  – City of the Sea – Launching-pad for Exploration– Portuguese Baroque – Indian Connection – School of Henry the Navigator

Week 4) Edinburgh  – Athens of the North – Scottish Enlightenment – The Two Scotlands – Invention of the Modern World: Philosophy & Science

Week 5) St. Petersburg   – Russia’s Window on the West – Romanov Golden Twilight – Tsarist Magnificence – Russian Baroque Architecture

Week 6) Barcelona  – Jewel of CataloniaMediterranean ConnectionsArt Nouveau Design – Modernist Art / Modern Architecture: Picasso & Antoni Gaudi
